DALZELL-SHAW POST 175
When someone speaks of The American Legion, one of the first thoughts is baseball. The American Legion baseball program has become one of the finest amateur programs in the United States. ALB Senior Division is comprised of players from sixteen to eighteen years of age while the Junior Division age is thirteen to fifteen years old. American Legion baseball provides instant recognition for it’s players by both college coaches and professional scouts. In fact, American Legion Baseball’s advisory committee consists of Major League Baseball owners, managers, scouts, umpires and other professionals. There is a long list of Major League Baseball players, past and present, that utilized American Legion Baseball as their stepping stone to the pros.

It all started in 1925

"In this city on July 17, 1925, by action of the South Dakota Department of The American Legion, the nationwide organization of Legion Junior Baseball was first proposed as a program of service to the youth of America". Those words are inscribed on a marble monument in the community of Milbank, South Dakota as a reminder of the beginning of this fine Americanism program. The program's years of existence can be explained best by a portion of that inscription: "A program of service to the youth of America." Since its beginning, over ten million young men have played Legion Baseball.

"My motto was to keep swinging, whether I was in a slump or feeling badly or having a trouble off the field. The only thing to do was to keep swinging" - Hank Aaron

American Legion Post 175

Legion baseball in Dalzell has been around for years and has grown into a mega fest when the season rolls around. Going back to last year, Post 175 finished last in the division, but hoping for a better chance this year after switching to a different league. Also, Post 175 has key players returning like Tiquan Griffin of Norfolk State, Justin Streett of Coker College, Charlie Taylor of Florence-Darlington Tech and Jayvon Sanders of Crestwood High School. Also, Post 175 is looking for a better season after adding 3 key players to the line up, Tyler Jackson of Robert E. Lee Academy, Dusty Baker of Robert E. Lee Academy and Johnathan Blackwell  of the Citadel. Post 175 has a mega line up that's sure to put them on top. Action gets under way June 4, 2007 when Post 175 travels to play Summerville at Summerville High School, game time is 7:30pm. For a look at Post 175 games follow the link below.

Coaches Outlook On Season

Head Coach -- Preston McDonald

Season Outlook -- One thing McDonald -- the second-year head coach of Dalzell-Shaw -- can look forward to is -- it can’t get much worse. Dalzell-Shaw only won one game a season ago. “I know everybody was probably happy to see us move into League IV,” McDonald said with a laugh. “But, it’s kind of hard to tell what we have. We have a lot of new guys, and until they compete under pressure -- it’s just hard to tell what type of team we have.” So far this year, McDonald’s team has had some success, winning a pair of postseason scrimmages. “Just about every year, our problem is pitching depth,” he said. “We’ve got to find some guys that are consistent on the mound. I think we are pretty average defensively. But, we have got some speed, and we are a decent hitting team,” he added. “We are nothing special. I think we will put the ball in play and see if we can use our speed to our advantage.” At least their most consistent pitcher has a famous name -- Dusty Baker. “He’s from Robert E. Lee,” McDonald said. “We don’thave a lot of returners, and in the past we haven’t gotten that many kids from Robert E. Lee, but this year we have eight so there are some new faces.” Charlie Taylor will also be one of Dalzell-Shaw’s best players, McDonald said. “He redshirted last year at Florence-Darlington Tech,” he said. “He’s a good player, and he will play first base and pitch some.”
